Videos on Supination

  • The two videos linked below should help in recognizing contact phase supination. The last post taught there are 3 names for this in the world: over or excessive supination, under pronation, or lateral instability. They mean the same thing to me but do imply some difference. Excessive supination you see as the patient walks away from you. Underpronation means that the supination is not seen, but the lack of pronation is apparent (you typically have to look up the leg). Lateral instability is the instability the patient feels when they are rolling out too far laterally. We have many types of instability from the foot, and lateral instability is one of the most prevalent.

I have talked with many experts about over supination. Some see it alot, some not at all. As I mentioned in my last post, if you do not look for it you will never see it. At least now, I have the author Darren Hardy to give credit to.  Quote by Darren Hardy: “You cannot see what you don’t look for, and you...”

My biomechanics fellow, Dr Ajitha Nair, sent this quote to me as a compliment during my first few weeks working with her. I had been pointing things out in gait evaluation, that she could see, but never used to look for, therefore it was not important before. I hope these videos help you see more of this problem.
