Dorsiflex Carbon AFO

  • A Dorsiflexion Assist Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO) is a type of brace designed to help individuals who have difficulty lifting the front of their foot (dorsiflexion). This condition is often referred to as foot drop, which can result from neurological, muscular, or anatomical impairments. The AFO helps improve walking ability, prevent tripping, and ensure proper foot positioning during the gait cycle. Two model types are available, the Dorsiflex Posterior which fits along the posterior calf, and the Dorsiflex Anterior which fits along the anterior shin. Both device types are lightweight, durable and versatile. Composed of carbon fiber composite material, they provide spring-loaded or elastic tension to assist the foot in returning to a neutral position during the swing phase of walking. These braces may be custom-made or off-the-shelf, depending on the patient's specific needs and the severity of their condition.

The Dorsiflex Carbon AFO may be used in case of drop foot with mild to no medial-lateral deformities, with weakened plantar/dorsiflexors of the foot, with or without medial-lateral instability of the subtalar joint. Common Indications include stroke-related foot drop, peripheral neuropathy (e.g., due to diabetes or trauma), Multiple Sclerosis, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, Muscular dystrophy, post-surgical or traumatic weakness affecting dorsiflexion. Benefits of the brace show improved walking efficiency, prevention of foot dragging, reducing the risk of falls, and enhancement of mobility and independence. The AFO facilitates foot lifting during walking ensuring proper toe clearance and preventing dragging during the swing phase of gait.  It also discourages foot slap by dampening foot strike.

Both braces are low profile and feature a strut which connects to a foot plate. The strut is generally located lateral to the heel but may be on the medial side if preferred. The main difference between the two braces is the anterior brace is preferred in cases of limited ankle dorsiflexion or posterior weakness. It wraps around the front of the lower leg, providing stability and control without restricting the posterior aspect of the leg and allows for more freedom of movement in the calf muscles.

Options for both braces are available on the custom order form. The foot plate can either be flat or customized with an orthotic type foot bed. The foot plates and struts can be made either more rigid or flexible. These braces are formed over a positive model of the patient’s foot and lower leg. A negative impression above the height of the finished brace must be created to correct and hold the foot, ideally with the ankle at 90 degrees and in a semi-weight-bearing or full-weight position.

Considerations include proper fitting being essential for comfort and effectiveness. An accommodative or functional OTC or custom foot orthotic may be paired with the flat foot plate models. The AFO should also be paired with a supportive shoe to maximize functionality. The Dorsiflex Carbon AFO should be considered for patients requiring a low profile, lightweight and versatile AFO for foot drop conditions.
